Charlotte Woman Arrested in D.C. Protests Speaks Out
CHARLOTTE, NC.– A group of Charlotte women joined thousands of others in Washington D.C. Thursday, protesting against the family separation policy of migrant children. WCCB learned one of those local women was arrested during the protests.
Jessica Moreno was one of dozens of women on Thursday that staged a sit-in at the U.S. Senate Hart building protesting the Trump Administration’s immigration policy. She was arrested for Civil Disobedience
“They ran out of handcuffs, so we were lucky there was too many women when there’s a lot of us there’s power in that they ran out of supplies,” says Charlotte Community Activist Jessica Moreno.
Earlier that day, thousands of women marched the Capitol demanding separated migrant families be reunited immediately, the government to end family detentions and to end the zero tolerance policy.
“The officers that were there they said they’ve never seen anything like it before, they’ve never arrested so many women before, it was like the largest women action ever.”
President Trump signed an executive order stopping the family separations – but it did not give specifics on how or when families would be reunited. Thousands of children will have to wait until their family’s immigration court proceedings are done, which can months or years. Moreno says she had to stand up for what she believes in.
