GASTON COUNTY, NC — The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new phone scam being reported throughout the county.
The call, which you can hear below, starts with an automated recording that identifies itself as “The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office Court and Warrant Processing Division.” The victim is then connected to a person who identifies themselves as a deputy with the GCSO.
The “deputy” then tells the victim they must pay sums ranging from $1,000 to over $2,000 by pre-paid card to avoid arrest.
Deputies say they have identified two numbers so far that are being used in connection to this scam: 704-842-3795 and 608-371-6666.
The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office says there is no such division as GCSO Court and Warrant Processing, and they will never contact you by phone asking for payment. Officials say the GCSO also does not accept any type of payment from pre-paid cards.
Anyone who receives this type of call or has any further questions can contact the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office at 704-869-6881.
