CHARLOTTE, NC — Lawyers in the trial of CMPD Officer Wes Kerrick just need to seat one more juror on Tuesday. Two were seated Monday.
Kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the 2013 shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell. As WCCB Charlotte’s Amy Cowman reports, it was another emotional day in the courtroom.
Another day of the Ferrell family dressed in purple and black, in honor of Jonathan. His mother says they were his favorite colors.
Also another day for the Kerrick family sitting and listening to the answers from the people who could be deciding CMPD Officer Wes Kerrick’s fate.
After a 6th day of jury selection, the state and defense approved two more jurors, one female and one male, making a total of eight women and three men seated, with one to go. Earlier Monday, the state dismissed one female juror who used to be a police officer and had current connections to law enforcement in Charlotte.
They also had another juror dismissed for cause. he said the stress of him deciding someone’s fate would make it too hard for him to to give both sides a fair case.
The state is now questioning a potential 12th juror. If they approve, then the defense will get a chance to keep or strike until they seat 12. Then they have to go through the sane process to pick four alternates.
