LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Top-ranked Kentucky has matched the best start ever for the storied basketball program. The Wildcats routed South Carolina 77-43 yesterday to push their record to 25-0. That equals the start from the 1953-54 Kentucky squad that rolled through the regular season but declined an NCAA tournament bid. Willie Cauley-Stein scored 14 points and Aaron Harrison added 11 for Kentucky. The Gamecocks shot just 24 percent.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) —Red-hot 3-point shooting — particularly from Jordan Roper — has helped lift Clemson past Virginia Tech, 75-54. Roper had 21 points on 5 of 6 3-point attempts as Clemson moved above .500 to 7-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson’s 11 3-pointers were a season high and one shy of the most long-range baskets hit in a game in coach Brad Brownell’s five seasons.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — South Carolina State almost saw its 20-point halftime lead disappear against Savannah State, but not quite. SC State held on for a 56-63 victory. South Carolina State’s Greg Mortimer scored on the game’s final play. Mortimer led the Bulldogs with 11 points. Hall led the Tigers with 18.

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina football recruit has been arrested on a petit larceny charge. Shameik Blackshear was arrested Friday and released from custody shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday. He’s due in court March 3. South Carolina athletic spokesman Steve Fink said the school was aware of the arrest and would let the legal process play out.
