Would You Rather Your Child Play Football Or Video Games?
You won’t see Friday night lights in two North Carolina towns this fall.
Chapel Hill High School and Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough won’t have a varsity football team this season.
The schools say they didn’t have enough upperclassmen interested in playing.
Students who do want to play can join the junior varsity team.
East Chapel Hill High School faced the same problem last year.
It’s not just happening here:
High school football participation has dropped in 41 states in the past 5 years, partially because of greater awareness of head injuries.
If kids don’t want to play football, they could end up playing varsity video games.
Esports leagues are starting this fall in at least 15 states across the country.
Schools will compete online and the championships will be played in front of a live audience.
Esports are becoming so mainstream that lots of colleges now have teams and some schools offer scholarships.
