Tracking the latest with Hurricane Isaias
Weekend rain heading to the Carolina
Friday will be our transition day. We’ll still have some sunshine, but clouds will become more noticeable throughout the day, and temperatures will top out in the upper 70s. An east-northeast breeze will bring in cooler air, so it won’t feel quite as warm as the past few days. By Friday night, clouds will thicken and temperatures will drop into the upper 50s.
The bigger weather story arrives this weekend as moisture increases across the Southeast. Saturday will start out mostly cloudy with temperatures in the mid-70s. A few showers could develop during the afternoon, but the rain becomes more widespread Saturday evening and overnight. A few thunderstorms will also be possible. At this a low tornado threat is in place.
Sunday is shaping up to be the wettest day of the weekend. We’ll have plenty of clouds with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms possible, especially during the afternoon. With the rain and clouds holding temperatures down, highs will only reach the low to mid-70s. Showers should gradually become more scattered Sunday night.
We are closely watching Hurricane Isaias in the Gulf. As of Thursday afternoon, Isaias is a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. The storm is moving east-northeast and is expected to turn more toward the north before making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday.
Isaias is not expected to make a direct hit on the Carolinas, but its moisture will be a factor in our weekend forecast. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting 1 to 3 inches of rain across much of the Southeast, with some locally higher totals possible. That moisture will help fuel the unsettled weather here, particularly Sunday.
By Saturday night and especially Sunday, keep the umbrella nearby as the Gulf system sends a much wetter pattern our way.
TOTALS: Roughly 1-2” of rain 3”+ possible.
WIND: It will be breezy due to a tight pressure gradient. Wind gusts up to 30 mph Saturday.
TORNADOES: Isolated tornadoes possible on Sunday.
