CMS Police Say School Hoax Threats Tripled In The District, And It’s Time To Take Action
CHARLOTTE, NC.– CMS police say hoax threats have tripled in the district, and it’s time to take action.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, The FBI and CMPD are teaming up to make sure your kids stay safe when school starts next week.
This partnership, targeting people who make threats against schools online. The campaign is called: Think Before You Post.
The district does not have specific numbers but says a lot of resources are used to investigate threats that turn out to be a hoax.
“Threats, including hoax threats made on social media or other platforms, can be considered federal crimes and are also state crimes,” says FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jason Kaplan.
“It can be a mistake that can cost you the rest of your life if you have to admit that on your applications for jobs,” says CMS Police Chief Lisa Mangum.
CMS is adding security cameras to the 6,500 already in place at schools across the district. Some will be at playgrounds and in mobile classroom areas.
“We’re always in the stage of evaluation, trying to upgrade trying to improve our safety plans,” says Chief Mangum.
CMPD is in the process of hiring four more school resource officers, and the CMS Police Department is adding a detective.
