WCCB asks CMPD about allegations of a racist text thread between officers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – WCCB has submitted an open records request to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to find out which officers the department has recommended for termination.
Our request comes after we asked the department to respond to allegations that six officers on a text thread used the “n word,” talked about who could pull over the most Black drivers, and talked about firing guns at Black residents. We asked CMPD to confirm that the texts were discovered during the department’s investigation into Officer Seth Elliott’s alleged misuse of Flock camera data.
The department replied to WCCB with a statement that never addressed those specific accusations. They did say, in part, “We will not tolerate any behavior that contradicts our core values or jeopardizes the trust we have built with the community we serve.”
We are continuing to ask the police department for answers.
