Police Say Speed A Factor In Fatal Steele Creek Wreck

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say one person is dead following a single-vehicle accident in Steele Creek early Sunday morning.

The wreck happened at about 2:07 a.m. in the 4200 block of Westinghouse Commons Drive between Westlake Drive and Steele Creek Road.

CMPD officers discovered a 2009 Audi A4 sedan that had driven off  the road and collided with a tree.

MEDIC pronounced the driver, 26-year-old Kevin Barreto, dead at the scene.

Detectives say Barreto was speeding on Westinghouse Commons Drive towards Steele Creek Road when he lost control, drove off  the road and hit a tree.

CMPD says they do not know if impairment is a factor at this time.
