Wilson’s World: Celebrating Read Across America Week at Hidden Valley Elementary School with Promising Pages

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s National Read Across America Week so Wilson headed to Hidden Valley Elementary School to see how the kids and teachers were celebrating.  Principal Michael Lungarini talked with Wilson about some of the events that will be going on at the school to help get the kids reading.  The kids will be enjoying everything from a flash mob reading group to a character parade later this week.

As part of the celebration  Promising Pages is having a ‘book tasting’ event for the students.  The kids will get to flip through books and write down what they like and don’t like about the books and hopefully get the kids finding the type of books they like and get them to reading.

More than 60,000 children in the Charlotte area are at risk of falling behind in their education due to their inability to read proficiently. The mission of  Promising Pages is to help every one of these children by giving them books to read and encourage the excitement for reading.

Each year Promising Pages gives away more than 100,000 free books to Charlotte area children.   This year want to raise more than 140,000 books to distribute.  Find out more about how you can donate new and upcycled books as well as volunteer your time and of course financial support at their website promisingpages.org.
