CHARLOTTE, NC – Grueling work in freezing temperatures for city workers repairing bursting water mains.
There have been 19 busted pipes across the city in the last 48 hours–11 on Friday.
“I came home and found out there was no water,” said Iris Brewer, a NoDa resident.
Down the street, the Molina family has five kids in the house and they haven’t had power since Friday morning.
“My kids can’t take showers. It’s a big problem,” said Ana Molina.
City crews are working around the clock to fix water main breaks caused by the freezing temperatures.
The city has doubled its staff and crews are only repairing emergency breaks. All other projects are on hold.
The biggest break Friday shut down South Hoskins Road for more than six hours as crews worked in the cold.
“We have on lots of layers, we’ve got hats, coats, gloves,” said Angela Lee, Chief of Operations for City Water.
There was also a busted pipe off Central and Pecan Avenues. Fortunately, nearby restaurants and stores were not impacted.
A city spokesperson says utility and water crews will work 24/7 all weekend.
