Stun Gun Found During CMS Safety Screening At Mallard Creek High School

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (News Release) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) conducted twelve random classroom safety screenings at Mallard Creek High School this morning Thursday, April 4. No deadly weapons were found. One stun gun, a non-deadly, taser-like device, was confiscated. The screenings proceeded without incident.

Mallard Creek High School was selected by random drawing. Classrooms screened within each school were selected by random drawing. No individual students were selected for screening. Parents at each school were notified at the start of screening and conclusion of screenings with the below messages. The district thanks the students, families and staffs of Mallard Creek High School, as well as the safety screening staff, for shared cooperation and a quick return to teaching and learning for students. The goals of CMS safety screenings are to help keep weapons out of our schools and to minimize class time disruptions and distractions from teaching and learning during the safety screenings. The district helps protect the safety and well-being of students and staff with a comprehensive set of measures that includes mental health supports, school access technologies, expanded surveillance, anonymous bullying reporting, dedicated safety, security and law enforcement staff, active survival training and lockdown drills and other measures in a CMS Circle of Safety. AFTER SAFETY SCREENING COMPLETED FROM PRINCIPAL TO FAMILIES

Today’s screening was a precaution only – there was no threat or emergency. All students and staff at our school are safe. Today’s safety screening was very similar to screenings we all participate in before entering football games and other school special events. Our staff, parents and students all wish safety screenings were not needed, but weapons must not be in our schools. I am happy to share that no weapons were found during today’s safety screening and classes were only minimally disrupted today.
