CHARLOTTE, NC – Thieves went to extreme measures to steal pills from a Northwest Charlotte drug store Monday.

It took crews more than six hours to fix the mess a thief left behind at the Mountain Island Marketplace at Mount Holly-Huntersville Road and Highway 16.

Crews had to bring in heavy equipment to repair cut phone and Internet lines that cut into business at the shopping center.

“We’re pick-up and delivery and without the phone calls coming in… that’s where our money is,” said Ed Cole, an employee at Pizza Hut.

Police say after the thief cut the lines, they pried open the back door of Rite Aid to get in the store.
According to CMPD, that happened between two and three o’clock on Monday morning. Once inside, police say the thief, or thieves, stole three thousand dollars worth of pills, including Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, and Percocet.

Rite Aid employees say the manager called police when they got to work and noticed someone had broken in and stolen black market drugs.

Residents say they’re concerned about the powerful pills being sold on the street.

“It just makes me nervous knowing that that’s on the streets near where my kids are. I’m a mom with young children, so it’s just scary to know that’s going on in our community,” said Heather Alley, a Northwest Charlotte resident.

VMPD has not released a suspect description or made any arrests.

“It’s going to be on the streets, and who knows what’s going to happen from there. You know, it’s best if they get caught quick,” said Cole.
