CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The pro football season unofficially gets under way this evening as the class of 2015 is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The annual Hall of Fame game, between the Steelers and Vikings, will be played tomorrow night. The class includes former players Junior Seau (SAY’-ow), Tim Brown, Charley Haley, Jerome Bettis (BEHT’-ihs), Will Shields and Mick Tingelhoff as well as executives Bill Polian and Ron Wolf.
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — Qualifying for tomorrow’s Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen takes place today. This is the final road-course race of the season for NASCAR. The soon-to-be-retired Jeff Gordon is the NASCAR career leader with nine road-course victories, including four at The Glen.
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Third-round play is taking place today in the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio. Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk) starts the day with a four-shot lead over several players including Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. Masters and U.S. Open champ Jordan Spieth (speeth) is six shots off the pace.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Blue Jays are looking to reduce their deficit behind the Yankees in the American League East to 2 ½ games this afternoon. The Jays beat the Yankees in New York last night 2-1 in 10 innings in the opening game of a three-game series.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Two of the top teams in the National League resume their weekend series this afternoon in Pittsburgh as the Pirates entertain the Dodgers. Last night the Pirates edged the Dodgers in 10 innings 5-4 in a game that began with Clayton Kershaw on the mound for the Dodgers against Gerrit Cole.
