IREDELL COUNTY, NC — Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol say a driver was killed on I-40 West Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened around 2:20pm between mile markers 156 and 155.
Troopers say westbound traffic was stopped due to a brush fire on the side of the interstate. 65-year-old Ward Miller, of Winston-Salem, was among those drivers when a 2001 Peterbilt tractor trailer swerved to miss the stopped vehicles and crashed into Miller’s 2003 Lexus.
The Peterbilt also collided with a Chevrolet pickup, troopers say, which was then pushed into a 2013 Kenworth tractor trailer.
Miller died at the scene.
A passenger in Miller’s vehicle and the driver of the Chevrolet were transported to a local hospital. Officials have not released any information on their conditions.
Officials have not said whether any charges will be filed. This is an ongoing investigation.
