RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) β€” Justin Faulk had a goal and an assist and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Tuesday night.

It was the 500th NHL game for Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward. Ward, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy when Carolina won the Stanley Cup in 2006, made 23 saves.

Jeff Skinner, Jordan Staal and Jay McClement also scored for Carolina. Alexander Semin added two assists.

Nicklas Grossmann scored in the first period for the Flyers, who lost in regulation for just the second time in their past 14 games (8-2-4).

Flyers goalie Rob Zepp stopped 31 shots.

T25-NC STATE-NORTH CAROLINA

NC State upends No. 15 North Carolina 58-46

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) β€” Anthony “Cat” Barber scored 15 points and North Carolina State beat No. 15 North Carolina 58-46 on Tuesday night, earning its first road win in the series in a dozen years.

Trevor Lacey and Ralston Turner each added 14 points for the Wolfpack (17-11, 8-7 Atlantic Coast Conference), who earned a second marquee road victory this month in pursuit of a fourth straight NCAA tournament trip. N.C. State didn’t shoot particularly well, but it played with toughness and composure while frustrating the Tar Heels (19-9, 9-6) just about all night.

By the end, N.C. State had held UNC to its lowest point total in its nearly three-decade run in the Smith Center. Not to mention beat a Roy Williams-coached Tar Heels team in Chapel Hill for the first time ever.

Freshman Justin Jackson scored 16 points for the Tar Heels, who shot 35 percent.

NORTH CAROLINA-ACADEMIC PROBE-MCADOO

3 former UNC athletes join McAdoo in lawsuit against school

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” A former women’s basketball player at the University of North Carolina has joined in a lawsuit which alleges the school failed to provide athletes a quality education by guiding them toward sham classes.

Kenya McBee has joined the class-action lawsuit filed by ex-football player Michael McAdoo in federal court last November.

Another former women’s basketball player, Leah Metcalf, and former football player James Arnold have filed a similar class-action lawsuit in state court.

McAdoo’s lawsuit said he was guaranteed a good education while being recruited, but was ultimately directed toward three options, one of which was African-American Studies β€” the curriculum that formed the basis for the long-running academic scandal.

UNC spokesman Joel Curran said in a text message that the school wouldn’t comment on pending litigation.

NASCAR-BUSCH REPLACEMENTS

David Ragan, Erik Jones to replace Kyle Busch at Atlanta

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” David Ragan will drive Kyle Busch’s car in the Sprint Cup Series this weekend at Atlanta, while 18-year-old Erik Jones will drive Busch’s car in the Xfinity Series.

Busch broke his right leg and left foot when he crashed head-on into a concrete wall Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. He left the Florida hospital on Tuesday and was transferred to one in Charlotte for further treatment.

Ragan will drive the No. 18 Toyota for at least the next several weeks. The move was accommodated by Front Row Motorsports, the team Ragan currently drives for, and sponsor CSX.

Jones will drive the No. 54 Toyota in Saturday’s race. Busch was driving the No. 54 in the Xfinity Series opener when he was injured.

Joe Gibbs Racing said additional lineup changes to the Xfinity car will be made moving forward. Jones currently runs a full season in the Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports and a partial Xfinity schedule for JGR in the No. 20.

NASCAR-SAFER BARRIERS

Busch crash leading to additional SAFER barriers at tracks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β€” International Speedway is developing a plan for the installation of additional SAFER barriers at Daytona and Talladega, and will review the safety standards at its other racetracks.

The renewed focus comes days after NASCAR star Kyle Busch broke his right leg and left foot in a crash into a concrete wall at Daytona. Busch left a Daytona Beach, Florida, hospital on Tuesday and was transferred to another facility in North Carolina for further treatment.

Busch was injured Saturday in the season-opening Xfinity Series race when his car hit an interior wall that did not have a Steel and Foam Energy Reduction barrier. After his accident, Daytona president Joie Chitwood III vowed to cover every inch of the speedway with SAFER barriers.

Daytona is owned by ISC, the sister company of NASCAR.
