CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Just last week, President Obama launched an initiative to help young men and boys of color succeed.

Obama says “My Brother’s Keeper” is needed and looks at what is already being done to assist young men.

Nate Jenkins is the White House Liaison to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He works directly with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, who is a cabinet secretary that sits on the inter-agency task force overseeing the initiative.

Jenkins says young black men are more likely to be incarcerated, be unemployed, read at a lower grade level and be suspended from school. Changes can happen in the criminal justice system, at home and in the schools to prevent these disparities.

Jenkins says the country has gotten used to the fact that black men under perform when they should still be outraged by it.
