Johnson eagled the par-5 16th hole en route to a 6-under 66. Russell Henley, Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), Scott Piercy and Harris English fired 68s, as did J.B. Holmes, Jason Day, Danny Lee and Matt Jones.
TORONTO (AP) — Toronto continues to lead the American League East by a half-game over the Yankees following the Blue Jays’ team record-tying 11th consecutive victory, 4-2 against Oakland. Ryan Goins smacked a three-run homer and Mark Buehrle worked seven-plus innings for his 13th victory. Brian McCann slammed a three-run homer and Brett Gardner drove in three runs as the Yankees beat Cleveland 8-6 to end a five-game losing streak.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have pulled within 1 ½ games of AL West-leading Houston while keeping Kansas City 11 games ahead of second-place Minnesota in the AL Central. The Royals led 5-3 until C.J. Cron and Kole Calhoun hit two-run doubles off Greg Holland in the ninth inning of the Angels’ 7-6 comeback win at Kansas City. Eric Hosmer belted a solo shot for the Royals.
UNDATED (AP) — The New York Mets top the NL East by 4 ½ games over Washington, while the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lead in the NL West has shrunk to 2 ½ games over San Francisco. Curtis Granderson and Kelly Johnson each homered and drove in three runs to support Noah Syndergaard (SIN’-dur-gahrd) in the Mets’ 11th victory in 13 games, 12-3 over Colorado. The Nationals were 3-1 losers to the Giants as Ryan Vogelsong combined with three relievers on a five-hitter.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a three-game sweep and pulled within six games of the NL Central lead by holding off the first-place Cardinals 10-5 in St. Louis. Pedro Alvarez launched a two-run homer while the Pirates erupted for seven runs in the first inning. Alvarez and Neil Walker each finished with three hits and two RBIs to help the Pirates win at Busch Stadium for the first time in six tries this season.
