SOPOT, Poland (AP) β Defending champion Ashton Eaton immediately set off on world-record pace in the heptathlon on Friday at the world indoor championships, and his wife Brianne Theisen Eaton took the early lead in the pentathlon.
Eaton took charge of the seven-event competition by running the 60 meters in 6.66 seconds, equaling his personal best and finishing .13 seconds faster than when he set the world record in 2012.
The American still has the long jump, shot put and high jump to come Friday before the competition concludes with three events on Saturday.
Theisen Eaton, who competes for Canada, set a personal best of 8.13 in the 60 hurdles to take the early lead.
