LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) β An east Arkansas radio station that was a hot spot for blues musicians in the 1940s and 1950s is being relaunched this week on the Internet.
Mid-South Community College will host an event Thursday called “Flip the Switch” to celebrate KWEM’s return to the airwaves.
The station, which is owned by the university, will stream online first and then return to FM airwaves by mid-August.
KWEM-AM radio fell silent in 1960, but its original frequency has survived as KWAM in Memphis, Tennessee.
The station offered unknown artists a few minutes of live exposure in exchange for $15 or having a sponsor. Those artists included now-legends B.B. King, Sonny Boy Williamson and Johnny Cash.
