CHICAGO (AP) β€” The Chicago Bulls hope to have guard Derrick Rose back in four to six weeks. General manager Gar Forman described today’s procedure on Rose’s right knee as being a success and that the former league MVP is able to bear weight on his legs.

UNDATED (AP) β€” The first black player in the NBA has passed away. Earl Lloyd took to the court for the old Washington Capitals back in 1950 and in 1955 was part of a league championship team in Syracuse. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement the league “will strive to always honor his memory.”

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) β€” The St. Louis Cardinals may have to start the season without pitcher Adam Wainwright. The ace of the staff has an abdominal strain and won’t pitch in exhibition games until mid-March. Wainwright was hurt Monday while putting a 45-pound weight back on a rack. He returned to St. Louis for an examination, which detected the strain.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) β€” The Chicago Bears have agreed to a one-year contract extension with tight end Zach Miller. The deal is just for this season. Miller spent last season on injured reserve with a foot injury after signing with the Bears.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) β€” Captain Mark Giordano (jee-ohr-DAN’-oh) of the Calgary Flames has been sidelined indefinitely with an undisclosed upper-body injury. The NHL’s top-scoring defenseman left Wednesday night’s 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils in the third period after he was hauled down by Devils forward Steve Bernier (burn-YAY’). Giordano has 11 goals and 37 assists in 61 games.
