LOUIS (AP) β The San Francisco 49ers have a three-game winning streak and a 4-2 record after Colin Kaepernick (KAP’-ur-nik) passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-17 win over the Rams in St. Louis. The Niners sacked Austin Davis five times and clinched the victory on Dontae Johnson’s 20-yard interception return in the final minute. Davis threw for 236 yards and a touchdown for the 1-4 Rams, who carried a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β Rain caused the postponement of Game 3 of the American League Championship series between the Baltimore Orioles and the Royals in Kansas City. The Orioles still plan to use Wei-Yin Chen (way yihn chen) as their Game 3 starter today, but the Royals could bypass Jeremy Guthrie for James Shields with Kansas City up 2-0 in the series. Royals manager Ned Yost said he’d announce his starting pitcher today.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) β The National League Championship Series resumes in San Francisco this afternoon, two days after the Cardinals evened the series at a game apiece on a homer by Kolten Wong in the bottom of the ninth. Tim Hudson will start for the Giants against Cardinals right-hander John Lackey. The Giants split their two home games in the division series after going 45-36 during the regular season.
PHOENIX (AP) β Chip Hale is the new manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks after three years as Oakland’s bench coach. Hale takes over for Kirk Gibson after the Diamondbacks posted three straight non-winning seasons, including a major league-worst 64-98 mark this year. Hale previous spent 10 years in the Diamondbacks organization.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) β Georgia running back Todd Gurley continues to practice while remaining on indefinite suspension. The school is investigating possible violations of NCAA rules committed by Gurley. He was held out of the Bulldogs’ 34-0 win at Missouri on Saturday, but he participated in Monday’s practice.
