Giants-Cards game three today

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) β€” Game 3 of the National League Championship Series will take place this afternoon in San Francisco with the Giants and St. Louis tied at one in the best-of-seven series. John Lackey is scheduled to start for the Cards against Tim Hudson. Lackey has posted wins in his last three playoff series. Hudson is coming off a one run, 7 1-3 inning-outing against Washington in Game 2 of the NLDS.

Right now, the Cardinals plan to keep catcher Yadier (YAH’-dee-ehr) Molina on their active roster for the series despite a strained left oblique muscle sustained in Game 2 on Sunday. He flew on the team charter to the Bay Area after leaving Busch Stadium for an MRI exam.

Manager Mike Matheny was encouraged Molina was able to throw Monday.

MLB-ALCS

Take two on Game 3 in the ALCS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β€” After rain washed out Game 3 of the American League Championship Series in Kansas City, the Royals and Baltimore are set to try again tonight at Kauffman stadium. The forecast is cold and windy but dry, with weather improving the rest of the week. The Royals are sitting on a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series after winning the opening games in Baltimore. The Royals are hot with wins in all six of their playoff games after a 29-year postseason draught. Wei-Yin Chen was scheduled to start last night’s Game 3 for the Orioles against former Baltimore pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. Chen is still slated to pitch tonight, but Royals manager Ned Yost says it’s possible he might bypass Guthrie and go with Game 1 starter James Shields. Such a move would allow Kansas City to use Shields in a potential Game 7.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Chris Kreider led the Rangers with five points – two goals and three assists – in five games against the Islanders.

The rest of the games have Anaheim skating at Philadelphia, Washington hosting San Jose, Dallas on the road at Columbus, Buffalo at Carolina, Colorado visiting Toronto, Tampa Bay home to New Jersey, Calgary on the road at Nashville and Los Angeles entertaining Edmonton.

DOLPHINS-SHELBY REINSTATED

Miami’s Shelby reinstated following suspension

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) β€” Miami Dolphins reserve defensive lineman Derrick Shelby has been reinstated from his suspension, which came after he was arrested on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and trespassing at a nightclub. Shelby’s reinstatement was announced eight days after he was suspended indefinitely.

Shelby has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The third-year veteran played in the first four games this season but missed Sunday’s loss to Green Bay.

Americans try to solve Ryder Cup with task force

UNDATED (AP) β€” The PGA of America wants to take a closer look at its Ryder Cup failures by creating a task force that includes Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, along with three past captains of losing American teams.

The 11-member “Ryder Cup Task Force” announced early today has five players, three former captains and three PGA of America officials. The purpose is to examine everything from how the captains are picked to how the players qualify for the team, and when the captain’s picks are decided.

Europe has won the Ryder Cup eight of the last 10 times, including a 16 1/2-11 1/2 victory last month at Gleneagles.

The previous two matches were decided by one point, including 2012 at Medinah when Europe rallied from a 10-6 deficit with the greatest comeback by a visiting team.
