CHARLOTTE, NC — As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention forms a special Ebola Response Team, Novant Health is changing how it will handle any possible Ebola cases.
Health officials say if the response team had been in place, a Texas nurse may not have contracted the virus. Nina Pham is in stable condition. She received a blood transfusion from Samaritan’s Purse Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly.
Here in Charlotte, Novant Health announced plans today for an isolated eight-bed unit to handle possible Ebola cases at Presbyterian Medical Center. “It is an intesive care unit; it’s also in an area where we can limit not only entry into it, in terms of getting a patient into that location, but we have a decidated elevator that will make that transition very easy,” said Novant Health VP of Medical Affairs Dr. Sid Fletcher.
In addition to Presbyterian, the other Novant regional hospitals that will handle any Ebola patients are Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem and Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, Virginia.
