Reed are the finalists for the Golden Spikes Award presented annually to the top amateur baseball player in the U.S. Conforto hit .345 with a .547 slugging percentage and .504 on-base percentage.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β NASCAR has tweaked the format for next month’s Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway, where owner points will now be awarded to the top five teams that don’t transfer into the main feature. NASCAR raced on dirt last season for the first time since 1970 when the Truck Series visited the track owned by Tony Stewart in Rossburg, Ohio.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β South Carolina has signed forwards Shamiek Sheppard and James Thompson for next season after two newcomers from last year’s squad transferred. Gamecocks head coach Frank Martin announced the signings of Sheppard and Thompson on Tuesday.
ATLANTA (AP) β John Buck had three hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning that gave Seattle the lead, and the Mariners rallied to beat the Atlanta Braves 7-5 Tuesday night for their fourth straight win. The Braves led 4-0 in the first inning and 5-2 in the second before falling to the Mariners’ comeback.
