Charlotte Man Charged With Shooting At Trump Supporters In Fort Mill

FORT MILL, S.C. — Fort Mill Police say they arrested a Charlotte man for firing a gun at Donald Trump supporters who were waving flags on an I-77 overpass Monday.

The group of Trump supporters were on the Sutton Road overpass when police say a vehicle drove by more than once and the people inside the vehicle were making derogatory remarks and yelling obscenities at the group, according to a news release.

A short time later, police say the vehicle returned to the area and the driver, 23-year-old Marquise Asomani, fired several rounds from a gun.  A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was in the area at the time of the incident and was able to follow the suspect’s vehicle.

The vehicle was located abandoned in the area of Gold Hill Road and Deerfield Drive but officers say they saw another vehicle trying to leave the area that had a person inside who matched the description of one of the suspects.

That vehicle was stopped and police took Asomani and two other men into custody, according to a news release.  Fort Mill Police say they charged Asomani with six counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, one count of unlawful carrying of a pistol, one court of pointing and presenting firearms at a person, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

The other two suspects were released and no charges were filed against them.  No injuries were reported.
