CMPD: Southeast Charlotte Crash Investigation Underway After Pedestrian Was Struck By Unmarked Police Vehicle

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating a southeast Charlotte crash after a pedestrian was seriously injured following being struck by an unmarked police car Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to Independence Boulevard around 6 p.m. after reports of the collision involving a pedestrian.

Officers located a pedestrian, identified as Amber Sanyasi, upon arrival lying in the roadway near a 2013 Chevrolet Impala, which was an unmarked CMPD police vehicle. Police say Sanyasi was transported to the hospital by MEDIC where he is being treated for serious injuries.

According to CMPD, after an initial investigation it was revealed that the unmarked police vehicle was traveling in heavy traffic on East Independence Boulevard. At the same time, the pedestrian was crossing the highway on foot and ran into the path of the police vehicle and was struck. The off-duty officer requested MEDIC and began tending to Sanyasi.

This section of East Independence Boulevard is separated by a cement barrier wall and is not marked with a crosswalk. According to police, speed does not appear to be a factor in this case, and the off-duty officer was found not to be impaired after being screened for impairment.

Test results are pending to determine if the pedestrian was impaired.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.

Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about this case is asked to call Detective Buckley at 704-432-2169. The public can also leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
