All-boy and all-girl classrooms or even schools could eventually be an option for Charlotte-Mecklenburg students. The district is going to research adding single-gender schools as an option in the magnet program.
It’s important to note, single-gender classes is just one of several new themes the school district is exploring, which also include Montessori-focused high schools and career-training magnets. We asked Assistant Superintendent Akeshia Craven-Howell why the single-gender idea is the one that seemed to grab everyone’s attention.
“It’s probably the one that people are least familiar with. I think it’s probably one that, historically, most people have associated with private schools or charter schools, and not necessarily public school districts,” she said.
Hopewell High and South Charlotte Middle have both tried single-gender classrooms in the past. South Charlotte still has them because students and parents have responded positively. CMS officials plan to visit a school in Ohio later this year, to get a better idea of how these schools would function.
So do you think single-gender classrooms are a good idea? We hit the streets to find out…
