Charlotte City Leaders Pass ‘Safe Charlotte’ Plan
CHARLOTTE — There are nearly 100 families across Charlotte mourning the loss of a loved one, killed violently.
CMPD, city and community leaders want to help fight crime in the city. Crimestoppers is now offering up to 2-thousand dollars for information to help solve every violent crime that happens in the city, like shootings into occupied dwellings. According to CMPD, that crime is up 50 percent over last year.
In fact, in the past week, 20 homes across Charlotte have been shot into. Monday night, city leaders passed their proposed ‘Safe Charlotte Plan’. It includes changes to police recruiting, and use of force policies, and it would give the Citizens Review Board subpoena power. As council discussed that plan, community advocates rallied outside the Government Center urging council to vote against it.
“I’m here to tell the city council until you really start involving the community in your decision making things are not going to get any better,” says Lucille Puckett, with Charlotte NAACP.
“I hope that rather than just pay lip service to the idea of supporting our police that we will always be there for them,” says Councilman Ed Driggs who represents District 7.
City leaders voted to approve the ‘Safe Charlotte Plan’. The city says it will devote 3 million dollars toward this project. One million is expected to go into Charlotte communities.
