The Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Sunday Night

Less than ideal conditions for viewing in the Carolinas.

The Geminid meteor shower will peak on the night of December 13-14 (Sunday evening until dawn on Monday). Geminid Meteor Shower

Viewing conditions for the Charlotte area:

Viewing conditions will not be ideal this year due to increasing rain chances and cloud cover. If you plan to view the meteor shower Friday or Saturday night, you will likely still be battling the clouds. Due to the weather forecast, the best chance to see a few meteors will be Friday night, but clouds will likely still be in play.

For best viewing, if there are clear skies:

  • View Sunday night into Monday morning around 2 AM.
  • Find a safe location that is away from bright city lights.
  • NASA says “Meteors can appear in any part of the sky, though they’ll appear to radiate from near the Constellation Gemini.”

If you cannot catch this meteor shower, there will be the Ursids Shower on December 21-22, followed by the Quadrantids Shower on January 2-3.
