Community Gathers In Cabarrus County To Honor Law Enforcement Day On May 7th

CONCORD, N.C. — The community will gather at the Cabarrus County Government Center to present the Robert J. Eury Award to a deserving veteran law enforcement officer on Friday, May 7th in honor of Law Enforcement Day.

Officials say the award service will begin at 10:45 a.m. on the front steps of the building located on Church Street South in Concord.

The prestigious Robert J. Eury Award is presented to an officer with at least 20 years of experience, who officials say embodies the integrity of Lieutenant Eury, who was killed while honorably protecting the people of this county.

Officials say the event will also pay tribute to the life and legacy of the seven other officers who died in the line of duty in Cabarrus County since 1899, including Concord Police Officer Jason Shuping, who was killed on December 16th, 2020.

A nameplate honoring Officer Shuping on the Cabarrus County Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Memorial will also be presented on May 7th, officials say.

Officials say the Law Day ceremony is a long-held tradition in Cabarrus County, and this year North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis will serve as the keynote speaker.

The event will also honor last year’s winner of the award, Concord Police Department Deputy Chief Jimmy Hughes, who officials say received the Robert J. Eury Award in a private ceremony due to COVID-19.

Officials say the event will keep to tradition by playing “Taps,” a bagpipe performance and a 21-gun salute.

Community members are invited to participate in the Law Day ceremony at the Government Center, and public parking is available in the public parking garage at the corner of Union Street and Corban Avenue, according to a news release.

Officials say Corban Avenue at McCachern Boulevard, Union Street at Corban Avenue and Church Street at Means Avenue will close, beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, to prepare for the event.
