ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — An investigation is underway after a woman was shot in the driveway of a Salisbury home Tuesday night.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Gheen Road residence around 10:45 p.m. after a report of a gunshot victim at the location. Officers said 33-year-old April Whitley and at least two other people pulled into the driveway of the home and upon exiting the vehicle someone jumped out of a nearby ditch and started shooting. Whitley was then struck in the right side of her chest.
The victim was treated by MEDIC before being transported to the hospital after one of the men from the vehicle took Whitley to the street where an ambulance Rowan County EMS was assisting someone on an unrelated routine medical call. Paramedics began treating her before being transported for further treatment.
Officials said that Whitley’s died shortly after arriving at the Emergency Room.
When deputies responded to the crime scene they located some shell casings in the driveway area of the Gheen Road residence.
The investigation into the case is active and ongoing.
