Demi Lovato came out as nonbinary on Wednesday saying “I’ll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them.”

Lovato says through healing and self reflection they came to the revelation that they are nonbinary, which the singer says could come as a shock from most of their fans knowing them as the “sexy, feminine pop star in the leotard.”
The singer doesn’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson, but says with making this decision “I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering.”
During the podcast, Lovato urged the importance of taking care of your mental health and explained the benefits that therapy has to offer. Lovato says they believe part of the reason their 2018 overdose occurred is because they were ignoring their truth and suppressing themselves, while not getting the help they needed.
Lovato directed viewers to get connected with a licensed therapist through talkspace.com, offering a promo code “4D” for $100 off your first month.
Several leaders with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups came out in support of the pop star including President and CEO of GLAAD who thanked Lovato for being true to themselves.
Lovato faced backlash from others including conservative commentator and spokeswoman Candace Owens who says using they/them pronouns is just poor grammar.
Commenters rushed to Lovato’s defense to clarify the singular “they” has been used in the English language since at least the 14th century, offering different examples of how “they” can be used to refer to one person.
