An Emotional Candlelit Vigil After A Deadly Street Racing Crash Claims The Life Of A 6-Year-Old Boy

GASTON, CO. — Liam Lagunas mother and father were hand-in-hand at a vigil for their 6-year-old son. Their grief was palpable. Liam and his father, Santiago, were on their way to get ice cream. Moments later, one of the alleged street racers crossed the center line and hit them head-on, killing 6-year-old Liam. Wednesday, dozens gathering at the scene of the crash for a candlelight vigil, including Liam’s uncle.

“He gave life to everything in this world. He touched everybody’s heart. He was a grown man at six years old. He would tell everybody what to do because it was the right thing to do,” says Allen Salazar.

Witnesses say an Audi and a Dodge Challenger were street racing on U.S. 74 Saturday night. When the Audi lost control, crossing the median and hitting a Nissan Altima being driven by Liam’s father. It happened at sparrow springs road near I-85. Witnesses told troopers the two cars were racing at speeds up to 100 miles an hour. Charges are pending against the alleged speed racers. We’re told Liam’s father survived but was taken to the hospital.

Liam’s mother did not want to speak at the vigil but sent WCCB this statement:

“Liam meant so much to many people. He was my whole world. I am truly lost without him. I am being strong for him because he was such a fighter. Liam had a smile that would change your whole day. His determination was like no other. He was my angel walking around on earth. He will never be forgotten. I love you, baby boy. You are always in my heart.”

Tabatha Rehnelt is Liam’s mother’s friend.

“He was the sweetest little boy. He loved my son; my son loved him. It makes me upset; I haven’t really about it,” sats Rehnelt says.
