Masks Now Optional For Students, Teachers In Union County Schools
MONROE, N.C. — Masks are now optional for students and teachers in Union County. School leaders made that decision following Tuesday night’s packed board meeting.
Dozens of parents and teachers showed up carrying signs and rallying before the meeting. Many parents urged school leaders to ditch the mask mandate for elementary students, while some teachers encouraged board members to put safety first.
“Wearing a piece of cloth on your face for another few months in order to have people in the classroom safe? To me, that’s a no brainer. That’s just called humanity,” says one Union County teacher.
“My son has health issues, as a single mother I need to think of my child. Masks aren’t necessary,” says a Union County parent.
Masks will be optional for students and teachers beginning August first. Union County students return to class on August 23rd.
