Head Of Charlotte Violence Interruption Program Says Credibility Is Key To Success

CHARLOTTE, NC – A new initiative to curb violence in Charlotte is underway. It’s called Alternatives to Violence. The aim is to cut down on homicides before they happen. The focus right now is on the Beatties Ford corridor.

“We’re investing in the human capital,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, “ we’re going to be looking at opportunities along the corridor to make it safer in terms of infrastructure.”

The plan is to reduce violence and invest in the community.

“I believe the most important thing is our credibility,” said Belton Platt.

He  is the site supervisor for the Alternatives To Violence initiative. He says the goal is to cut down on the number of homicides by intervening before violence breaks out. They also aim to be a mediator for people and families in need.

“Connect youth and their families with job opportunities, with mental health services, with basic needs services,” explained Platt.

His team of five will build trust in the community and try to combat online beefs and diffuse situations through education.

“Show them the consequences of violence. How it hurt the family. All the things that were going to deliver in literature and flooding the city with that,” said Platt.

Platt says he knows the Charlotte city streets well. A drug dealer in the 80’s, Platt was involved in a shootout with police. After spending time in prison, he turned to religion and education.

“From that point in my life, my life was never the same. My heart was changed. I had hope,” said Platt.

Having lost three sons, the most recent to gun violence, Platt says he knows the pain many families are going through, and he wants to be there to support the community.

“I believe this is a movement. And it’s going to make a difference in the city of Charlotte,” said Platt.
