Gators, Badgers celebrate…76ers halt skid…Spurs win again

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Top overall seed Florida earned a spot in the NCAA men’s Final Four and ended Dayton’s surprising run in the tournament by downing the 11th-seeded Flyers 62-52 to win the South Regional in Memphis. Scottie Wilbekin (WIHL’-beh-kihn) scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the first half as the Gators picked up their 30th consecutive victory. Patric Young added 12 and seven rebounds to help Florida finally reach the national semifinals after three straight exits in the regional finals.

 

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Second seed Wisconsin cut down the nets as West Regional winners in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament following a 64-63 overtime triumph against top seed Arizona. Frank Kaminsky had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Badgers to their first Final Four since 2000. Nick Johnson led the Wildcats with 16 points but was unable to release a shot before the final buzzer.

 

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers’ NBA record-tying losing streak has ended at 26 games as Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams each had 21 points to lead a 123-98 blowout win over Detroit. The 76ers shot 52 percent and held the Pistons to 39 percent from the field. The 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers also lost 26 straight games.

 

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs stretched their winning streak to 17 games to stretch their lead in the Western Conference to 3 ½ games over Oklahoma City. Marco Belinelli had 18 points and the Spurs opened the game on a 23-6 run before completing a 96-80 win against New Orleans. Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard and Manu Ginobili (MAN’-oo jih-NOH’-blee) each added 15 points to help the Spurs end the Pelicans’ five-game winning streak.

 

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have wrapped up Mike Trout through 2020. The American League Rookie of the Year in 2012 and runner-up in the AL MVP voting the last two seasons has agreed to a six-year, $144.5 million deal.
