Red Sox take advantage of Orioles gifts
UNDATED (AP) β Boston parlayed three Baltimore errors into five unearned runs in a rain-shortened 7-1 Patriots Day win over the Orioles. The game was called after 6 1/2 innings. Boston scored four runs in the third when losing pitcher Wei-Yin Chen walked four and made an error, and third baseman Manny Machado committed another error.
Justin Masterson improved to 2-0 with five innings of work. He allowed a run on three hits, walked three and struck out six.
Along with the annual Patriots Day contest, the day’s baseball schedule features eight more contests. In Detroit, the Tigers, who have won 10 of their first 13 games, are hosting the Yankees. Alfredo Simon (al-FRAY’-doh SY’-mon) takes his 2-0 record against CC Sabathia (suh-BATH-ee-ah) who is winless in two decisions.
Kansas City is right behind the Tigers in the American League Central with its 9-3 mark. The Royals are entertaining the Twins this evening.
The remaining games feature the Cubs against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, the Brewers home to the Reds, Cleveland in Chicago to face the White Sox, the Rockies home to the Padres, Oakland in Anaheim to play the Angels and Seattle hosting Houston.
BOSTON MARATHON
A busy day of sports in Boston
BOSTON (AP) β Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa (leh-LEE’-sah deh-SEE’-sah) and Kenya’s Caroline Rotich (ROH’-tish) are the winners of the men’s and women’s divisions of the Boston Marathon. Desisa won the 119th version of the annual race in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 17 seconds for his second victory in the race. He finished first in 2013, just hours before a pair of bombs exploded at the finish line.
Rotich won the women’s race in an unofficial 2:24:55. It’s the first Boston victory for the 30-year-old.

Red hot Mets lose two
NEW YORK (AP) β The NL East-leading Mets have lost two players to injury. Catcher Travis d’Arnaud (dar-NOH’) will be out more than three weeks, and left-handed reliever Jerry Blevins will miss more than six weeks after both were injured against Miami Sunday. The team says that d’Arnaud will be in a splint for three weeks after his right hand was broken when he was hit by a pitch while Blevins will be in a splint for six weeks after a line drive fractured his throwing arm.

Atlanta pitcher suspended
NEW YORK (AP) β Atlanta pitcher Andrew McKirahan has been suspended for 80 games following a positive test for a banned substance under Major League Baseball’s drug program. The reliever is the fifth big league pitcher in 25 days disciplined for using performance-enhancing drugs. The 25-year-old left-hander has a 4.15 earned run average in three appearances this season.
NBA PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE
Bulls and Warriors look for win No. 2
UNDATED (AP) β Tonight’s NBA playoff schedule features two games as Chicago entertains Milwaukee and New Orleans is at Golden State. In each case the home team has a 1-0 lead in its best of seven series.
The Bulls won their opener with the Bucks 103-91 while the Warriors stopped the Pelicans 106-99. Game 3 in each series will take place Thursday in Milwaukee and New Orleans.
NBA PLAYOFFS-HAWKS
Hawks’ Horford banged up
ATLANTA (AP) β Hawks center Al Horford is not sure if he’ll be able to play in Game 2 of the first-round playoff series against Brooklyn because of a dislocated finger. Horford injured his right pinky while going for a rebound in Atlanta’s Game 1 win Sunday. He was able to return to the court with his finger taped but says “there’s still some question” about his status for Wednesday.
NBA-SIXTH MAN
Williams of the Raptors wins
NEW YORK (AP) β Guard Lou Williams of the Toronto Raptors has been named winner of the NBA’s Sixth Man Award. In his 10th season of play Williams averaged a career-high 15.5 points a game. Williams received 78 first-place votes and 502 total points from a panel of 130 sports writers and broadcasters. Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics finished second with 324 points with two-time winner Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers third.

Ducks can go three up
UNDATED (AP) β The Anaheim Ducks own a 2-0 lead over Winnipeg in their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series. After 4-2 and 2-1 wins on home ice, the Ducks are facing the Jets this evening in Winnipeg. The other two games tonight feature series’ deadlocked at 1-1. In Pittsburgh, the Penguins are playing host to the Rangers while Minnesota is home to St. Louis.

San Jose cans coach
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) β Coach Todd McLellan has parted ways with the San Jose Sharks after seven seasons. The two sides agreed to the move after the Sharks missed the playoffs and finished 12th out of 14 teams in the Western Conference. McLellan goes out as the franchise’s winningest coach with a 311-163-66 regular-season record. That was third best in the league since he took over before the 2008-09 season.
NHL-CAPITALS
Caps lose Fehr
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) βWashington center Eric Fehr (FAYR) will miss at least the next two playoff games against the New York Islanders because of an upper body injury. He was hurt in Washington’s 2-1 overtime loss on Sunday.
The Capitals trail the series 2-1 entering Game 4 in New York on Tuesday.
NFL-EAGLES
Tebow finds a team
PHILADELPHIA β Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow (TEE’-boh) has signed a one-year contract with the Eagles. Tebow, who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2012 with the New York Jets, was released by the New England Patriots before the 2013 season and spent last year working in television as an analyst for the Southeastern Conference Network and ESPN.
The 27-year-old becomes part of a busy depth chart as the Eagles already have quarterbacks Sam Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne on the roster.

Faldo joins Watson in final Open
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) β Three-time British Open champion Nick Faldo (FAL’-doh) is joining five-time winner Tom Watson in making this year’s British Open at St. Andrews his last. Watson had already make his plans known and now Faldo, who will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of his second British Open title at the Old Course in St. Andrews in 1990, is joining him.
