Update on the latest in sports:

Falcons and 49ers win

UNDATED (AP) — The 2015 NFL schedule is fully under way as there were two Monday Night games last evening. In the first contest the Falcons held off the Eagles 26-24 as Julio Jones had nine receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns, while in the second game the host Niners got the better of the Vikings 20-3. The San Francisco defense held Adrian Peterson to just 31 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Cubs at Pittsburgh for two

UNDATED (AP) — For most of the season St. Louis had a commanding lead in the National league Central. Not any longer. As the regular season winds up the Pittsburgh Pirates have crept to within 2 ½ games for the division lead and not far behind are Chicago’s surprising Cubs at 6 1/2 back.

Today the Pirates and Cubs open a four-game series in Pittsburgh with a day-night doubleheader. The opening game pitching has Jason Hammel going for the Cubs against 16-game winner Gerrit Cole for the Bucs. He starts the day with a sterling 2.54 earned run average.

The pitching in Game 2 has Jon Lester going for the Cubbies against J.A. Happ.

Both the Cubs and Pirates have won seven of their last 10 games while the Cardinals, who are in Milwaukee tonight, have lost seven of 10.

The Astros and Rangers resume their big four-game series in Arlington tonight. Last night the homestanding Rangers walked off the field with a 5-3, reducing Houston’s lead to just a half-game. Tonight Houston’s Collin McHugh goes for his 17th win while the Texas counters with Derek Holland.

The Yankees reduced the Blue Jays’ lead in the American League East to three games with a win last night over the Rays. Tonight the Yanks and Rays meet once again in St. Petersburg, Florida, while the Blue Jays are in Atlanta facing the Braves. Lefthander Mark Buehrle (BUR’-lee) makes his first start for Toronto since receiving a cortisone shot in his pitching shoulder last week.

The hottest team in baseball remains New York’s Mets. They have won eight straight and this evening are home to the Miami Marlins with Jacob deGrom on the mound. He has won five of his last six decisions.

With Cleveland’s win over the Royals last night and Minnesota’s over the Tigers, the Kansas City lead in the American League Central is under 10 games. They top the Twins by 9 as the final few weeks of the season remain. Tonight the Royals face the Indians again in Cleveland while the Twins are home to the Tigers.

Your remaining games tonight feature the Red Sox in Baltimore, the Phillies home to the Nationals, San Diego at Arizona, Seattle hosting the Angels, Colorado in L.A. against the Dodgers and the Reds in San Francisco.

Report: Texas dumps AD

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Texas athletic director Steve Patterson has been fired. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the school had not announced the move.

Patterson was let go after just two years. In that time, the storied football program has changed coaches but is still struggling. He has also clashed with fans over increased ticket prices and a “loyalty” system that angered longtime season-ticket holders.
