I-77 Toll Opponents Plan Another Lawsuit
CHARLOTTE, NC– Opponents of the I -77 toll lanes say they’re planning another lawsuit to halt construction.
The group “Widen I -77” rallied in cornelius today. In January a judge denied an injunction to stop the project.
Since then, the group raised 25,000 dollars in hopes of appealing that ruling.
And this week, two Mecklenburg county lawmakers introduced separate bills to cancel the contract.
Kurt Naas of Widen I-77 “Its our will not be necessary, that the legislature in fact passes a bill in which the contract is cancelled and we drop the lawsuit.”
If the bill passes, the state would have to pay substantial penalties..
But widen I -77 says canceling the contract would still save taxpayers more than 300-million dollars.
