Why is CLT Buying More Guns After Orlando Massacre
CHARLOTTE, NC — Lawmakers on both sides are showing signs of agreement on stricter gun control measures.
Democrats staged a filibuster to demand action on pending gun bills.
In the meantime, people in Charlotte pack local gun shops.
“You will have somebody come in here and purchase a thousand dollars in magazines alone because they feel like a law is going to be passed and we’re going to lose our rights to our firearms,” said Ruben St. Louis.
St. Louis is a hobby shooter who was buying at Hyatt’s Gun Shop Wednesday.
There, the owner says sales have tripled since the nightclub shooting.
Customers have bought more than 30 semi automatic rifles, ones people fear the Senate could ban.
“People start thinking about, ‘I better buy a gun for self protection, and I better do it now before laws are passed.’,” said Larry Hyatt.
Although, zero bills that would do that have come up for discussion in the filibuster,
lawmakers are focusing on bills that expand background checks and ban sales to those on terrorist watch lists.
“Quit talking about it put it in law,” said another gun owner, Michael Robinson. “we need to do something because we’re asking ourselves too many questions after the fact that it’s already happened.”
“The no fly, the terrorist watch, those are things we wouldn’t mind seeing in the background,” said Hyatt.
Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump seems to agree.
He tweeted he will meet with the NRA about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list or no fly list to buy guns.
“If you’re on any kind of watch list, I don’t think you should ever be able to buy a firearm,” said St. Louis.
