Police Identify Driver Killed In Single Vehicle Accident In South Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police identified the man involved in a deadly single vehicle crash off I-77 Wednesday morning.

Investigators say Donald Dixon, 35, was driving a vehicle that was reported stolen around 5am.  That vehicle was also involved in a hit and run around 7:30am, according to police.

Officers responded to call about a single vehicle crash at the North Carolina Welcome Center on I-77 near Westinghouse Boulevard just after 8am.

Police say it appeared Dixon was traveling in the stolen car on the entrance ramp road from I-77 to the Welcome Center but he was traveling too fast to make the curve.  The vehicle reportedly ran off the right side of the road, struck a tree and a light pole before going airborne.  The vehicle also struck another tree while airborne.

Investigators say Dixon was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.  Police say it is unknown at this time if the driver was impaired.  Anyone with information on this crash is asked to call 911.
