Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Injured During Chase With Man On Four-Wheeler

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Investigators say a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy broke his hand while taking a suspect in custody following a chase involving a four-wheeler.

Deputies say they were called to investigate after a Lincolnton Police officer observed a man driving a four-wheeler on Country Club Road near Salem Church Road.

Two deputies saw the four-wheeler come from behind a business on South Industrial Park Road and say the driver took off when they attempted to stop the four-wheeler.

A chase ensued and reached speeds of 55 miles per hour before the four-wheeler crashed into a utility pole that was blocking a driveway to a private property.

The driver, David Webb, jumped off the four-wheeler and ran into the woods, according to a news release.  Deputy R.D. Richard was in pursuit of Webb when officials say Webb threw his helmet, striking the deputy in the hand.

Webb then slipped and fell and was taken into custody after a brief struggle, according to a news release.  Officials say Deputy Richard’s right hand was broken from the impact of the helmet.

Webb has been charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, driving while license revoked, resist, delay and obstruct a public officer and assault on a government official.  He was placed in jail under a $37,000 bond.
