Man Charged With Intentionally Setting East Charlotte Apartment Fire That Displaced 130 Residents

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives with the CMPD’s Arson Unit and the Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force have charged Jesus Reyes Lopez for his involvement in the apartment fire that occurred in the 5600 block of Farm Pond Lane in the Hickory Grove Division.

On Monday, July 17, 2017, at approximately 12:58 a.m., officers with the Hickory Grove Division responded to the Woodscape Apartments, located at 5612 Farm Pond Lane, in reference to a structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported a three story apartment building with flames through the roof and immediately requested a second alarm.  A short time later, a third alarm was transmitted.  CFD Fire Investigators and CMPD Arson Detectives were notified and responded to the scene.

During the investigation, members from the Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force determined that the fire had been intentionally set.

As a result of information and evidence gathered during the investigation, detectives identified Lopez as a suspect in the case and obtained warrants for his arrest.   Detectives requested assistance from the Violent Criminal Apprehension Unit in locating Lopez.

Approximately 130 residents were displaced due to the fire, which caused approximately $1.3 million dollars in damage.

Earlier this morning, detectives along with officers from the Hickory Grove Division and K9 Unit, located and arrested Lopez without incident.  Lopez is currently being transported to police headquarters where he will be interviewed by Arson Detectives.  At the conclusion of the interview, Lopez will be charged with two counts of Attempted 1st Degree Murder, 1st Degree Arson, and Damage to Property by use of an Incendiary Device, and transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
