New Charlotte Scooter Laws Effective Immediately
CHARLOTTE, NC — New e-scooter laws in are effective immediately in Charlotte.
City Council voted seven to three to pass an ordinance that regulates how you ride.
You can’t drive faster than 15 mph. You can’t put more than one person on an e-scooter or e-bike. You cannot ride on the sidewalk in the core area of Uptown, bounded by Church Street, Stonewall
Street, College Street, and 7th Street.

Charlotte Department of Transportation told council Monday that scooter companies can help police enforce the laws when people report problem riders.
CDOT said it is talking to scooter companies about possibly banning repeat offenders from riding.
The city will start putting signs up across the city telling you what you can and cannot do.
Council Members Braxton Winston, Lawana Mayfield and Matt Newton voted against the ordinance. Some pointed out problems with over-regulation. They say the scooters already cannot go over 15 mph.
Council has been debating these rules since Sept. 2018.
