Trump signs executive order to dismantle Dept. Of Education
UPDATE: 3/20/25 9:00PM
President Trump signed an executive order Thursday afternoon to dismantle the Department of Education.
“It sounds strange, doesn’t it? Department of Education, we’re going to eliminate it and everybody knows it’s right,” said President Trump.
Trump said the move takes control out of the federal government and puts it back in states hands.
“It’s a common sense thing to do and it’s going to work,” explained Trump.
Western Carolina University Political Science professor, Chris Cooper, hopes other branches will remain in charge of many of the DOE functions. If that’s the case, he believes we likely won’t feel the effects.
President Trump said on Thursday Pell Grants, Title One funding, and resources for children with special needs will be saved.
According to the North Carolina Association of Educators, 950,000 students in our state benefited from Title One and disability funding, totaling almost a billion dollars. 63-million was to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools alone.
Cooper says the executive order will likely be challenged.
In response, CMS tells WCCB:
WASHINGTON, D.C.– President Trump is expected to sign an executive order Thursday to begin the process of dismantling the Department of Education. This follows the agency announcing workforce cuts of nearly fifty percent earlier this month. About 1,300 employees were laid off with hundreds more taking voluntary buyouts. Shutting down the department entirely would require an act of congress but according to a Trump Administration official, the president will direct Department of Education Secretary, Linda McMahon to take the steps needed to quote “return education authority to the states.”
