Flash flooding causes evacuations in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.ย  — ย Tropical Depression Chantal left an impact on North Carolina Sunday night.ย 

Heavy rain and flash flooding caused road closures and evacuations.

In these pictures, taken by Joe Nanney who lives at East Grate Crossing in Chapel Hill, you can see people walking in water almost up to their knees.ย 

Meteorologist James Scott’s mom’s car was almost completely submerged in flood waters and there was also water seeping into nearby businesses.

Heavy rains caused a highway to collapse on Sunday in Chatham County. Officials say Chatham County was hit with six to eight inches of rain.ย 

A flash flood warning will remain in effect for that area until Tuesday afternoon.
