Cloudy & breezy start to workweek, few shower chances Tuesday
Highs will struggle to clear the 60s & 70s on Tuesday & Wednesday before a major warm-up by the end of the week.
The good times keep rolling into September’s halfway point after a gorgeous weekend, but get ready for a brief pattern change as a coastal low develops to our east. Highs will reach near-normal values across the board in the 60s, 70s, and lower 80s this Monday afternoon as variable clouds come and go before rain chances push closer to the WCCB Charlotte viewing area overnight into Tuesday. While Tuesday brings the most significant opportunities for rain we’ve seen in over a week, don’t expect much in terms of shower activity as the moisture largely falls apart on its journey west. That said, we should see a major cooldown through midweek as highs struggle to clear the 60s and 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Abundant sunshine returns by Thursday as temperatures skyrocket back near 90Β° to close out the workweek around the Metro. Sunny skies and warmer highs appear poised to carry into the weekend before another significant cooldown arrives by Sunday as a powerful ridge of high pressure sets up to our north. Rain chances appear to be few and far between once again beyond Tuesday – be aware that fire danger may increase this weekend.
The tropics are finally beginning to stir once again. It’s been nearly three weeks since our last named storm – Tropical Storm Fernand – dissipated over the open Atlantic on August 28, but chances are increasing that we’ll see Tropical Storm Gabrielle form well east of the Caribbean sometime this week. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is giving a developing tropical wave an 80% chance of becoming Gabrielle over the next seven days. While this storm will be something to watch this week, most models take future Gabrielle away from the mainland United States.
