Summer-like temps continue, end of week trending wetter
Rain chances pick up by Thursday morning and may linger into the weekend ahead.
Tuesday marks the second day of fall, but someone forgot to pass along the memo to Mother Nature. Highs will soar near 90Β° today and tomorrow across the Piedmont and Foothills as abundant sunshine dominates the Carolina skies once again. Don’t despair just yet, fall lovers – cooler air is on its way, but it will come at a rainy price as a cold front approaches from the west. While the High Country will see scattered showers throughout much of the week ahead, the Metro won’t get in on the action until Thursday morning at the earliest. It’ll be nearly three straight weeks without a drop of rain in the Queen City by this point, but all indications right now are that we’ll quickly make up for lost time.
Medium-range models suggest much of our area will see 1-2″ of rain between Thursday and Sunday, with a low-end severe threat also showing up for the final two days of the workweek. While rain chances this weekend appear to be more of a crapshoot, it does appear that Saturday and Sunday are trending wetter for many around the Metro and eastward. Temperatures will be highly dependent on the amount of rain and cloud cover we see, but there’s good agreement that the Charlotte area will hang around the upper 70s and lower 80s beyond Wednesday.
We still only have one named storm in the Atlantic Basin right now, but that will likely change over the coming days. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor Category 4 Hurricane Gabrielle after the storm underwent rapid strengthening on Monday, now located roughly 300 miles east of Bermuda. Gabrielle will not be a problem for the Carolinas as it swirls eastward over the open Atlantic, but we’ll want to watch two areas for potential development north of the Caribbean closely over the coming days. These two regions have 50% and 80% odds of development over the next seven days, respectively; the more western, 50% chance region is the one we want to monitor the closest. Medium-range models bring what appears to be a named storm in the vicinity of the Carolinas early next week. The next two names on the 2025 Atlantic list are Humberto and Imelda.
