Significant severe weather threat tonight through Monday

The severe weather threat is continuing to build across our region late tonight into Monday. The primary threats are damaging winds and even a few tornadoes, especially for locations south of I-85 and along and east of the I-77 corridor. A isolated storm could also produce some large hail.

  What to Expect

We could see a few strong to severe storms develop this evening.

Tonight’s severe weather threat looks fairly limited and  less widespread than what we’re watching for on Monday morning and afternoon., as a cold front moves across the region.

Sunday Night: The first round of weather moves in this evening, as scattered showers and thunderstorms. The main concern with this first batch will be gusty, damaging winds. While the tornado risk is low, we can’t completely rule out a brief, isolated tornado with any stronger storm. This threat will linger into the overnight, and will be the highest for locations south of I-85.

Have multiple ways to get alerts tonight into tomorrow. Some storms will happen in the dark so have a plan in place.

The second round Monday morning: A line of thunderstorms forming just ahead of the cold front will move into the North Carolina mountains. This round will pack a stronger punch. The main concerns will be damaging wind gusts and the potential for a few isolated tornadoes as the line of storms pushes through

Timing Monday- Mountains 5am-9am, East of the mountains 9am-1pm

Behind the front, temperatures will fall below freezing across the North Carolina mountains Monday afternoon into the evening. This will set the stage for a brief round of  snow. Light snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible, mainly over the higher elevations. Expect a cold St. Patrick’s Day with temperatures stuck in the 40s for the Piedmont, and near Freezing in the High Country.
